Scotland: Kinross Castle
Strasbourg
Ive always been interested in traveling to Scotland because of the rich history of the region. Of course, one of the first things you may think of if you are like me, is Mary Queen of Scots. Her story has always amazed me, ruling or having a claim to the throne in 3 powerful countries at some point in life, but then finding herself to be exiled to a dreary castle in the middle of a lake (or loch as the Scots call it), only to escape by boat..truly one of the most romantic tales of Scottish history.
Most recently I was able to visit this castle, Loch Leven Castle, not just up close in person, but starting out of our bedroom window every morning. We recently had the fortune to stay in Kinross House, an estate house that sits right on Loch Leven. The house was originally built, perfectly positioned and axially aligned to have Loch Leven Castle be the centerpiece view from the garden front. Absolutely stunning and brilliant! Loch Leven Castle, sits on a tiny island in the middle of the loch, that is told to long ago have had the lake come right up to the footsteps of the castle.
The town of Kinross sits beside Loch Leven, which is the largest lake in Scottish lowlands. So quaint, and everything you would imagine a Scottish village to be, cobblestone streets, amazing butcher shop in the center of town, with little shops surrounding it.
Kinross House however isn't so quaint. It is an exquisite masterpiece of architecture. Everything of the best without leaving out any detail. The house sits on the west end of the lake, gardens reaching down to the very waters edge. The house was originally built in 1685 by Sir William Bruce, but restored only 7 years ago, back to its brilliant and beautiful state. Being on the estate is like living in a dream state of royalty.
